Lace up for life-saving impact: CCI’s Café Café & Cacao Fun Run, April 27

“Sometimes the work we do can seem so small, next to the size and scope of the challenges we face—poverty and diseases, and the social structures that can reinforce them. It can feel discouraging, like no amount of work we do will make a difference to the problems facing our patients. And yet, the most consistent theme we hear is gratitude—simply for being there, for caring enough to come from so far away.
If something so small as simply showing up can seem so big to our patients, how can anything we do fail to make an impact, no matter how big the problem?” —-Dr. Jeremy Howe, primary care physician, member of CCI’s team in the Philippines.
Lace up for Chronic Care International’s Café & Cacao 5K on Sunday, April 27! Now in its 6th year, this fun run supports CCI’s mission to bring essential care to people living in poverty with diabetes and high blood pressure — two of the world’s leading causes of preventable suffering and death.

Building on work many supporters know well, Omaha-based CCI partners with teams in the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and beyond to provide low-cost, essential health care, self-care education, and crucial emotional support. The focus remains on fostering autonomy, dignity, and long-term wellbeing for patients facing chronic diseases without consistent access to care. Sustained by volunteers and tax-deductible donations, CCI’s low-cost care model continues making a meaningful, measurable difference.

Named for two of the Dominican Republic’s most beloved crops, the Café & Cacao 5K was created by Andrea Dethlefs and her husband, Dr. Hans Dethlefs — president and medical director of CCI.

“This was our way of combining our love of running with our desire to bring people together for CCI,” says Andrea, who is also a board member. “It’s a fun way to build awareness of who we are while building community for what we do.”

The 5K route winds through the expansive, rustic Walnut Creek Recreation Area in Papillion, just outside Omaha. With guidance from a longtime Omaha Marathon leader, the Café & Cacao 5K offers a well-paced, accessible course for runners and walkers alike. Participants can expect support from enthusiastic volunteers — and, as a reward, coffee, hot cocoa, bagels, and fresh fruit are waiting at the finish line. All participants will receive goody bags, and race winners will take home prizes.

Packet and bib pick-up kicks off at 7:30 a.m. near the pavilion at Walnut Creek’s Gold Coast entrance.  The 5K begins at 9am.

One hundred percent of proceeds from the Café & Cacao 5K fun run go directly to support CCI’s mission. Can’t be there in person? No problem! You can still make an impact by signing up to walk or run in your own neighborhood. You can also contribute by donating here.

Good Luck, and let’s go CCI!
